Building a stronger Alberta
May 10, 2007
Alberta's friendship with China will pay off for province's education, technology and business sectors
Edmonton... A multi-year concerted effort by the Alberta government to open China's trading doors has yielded new intercontinental alliances that will help build a better Alberta and may improve the quality of life for people here, across Canada and around the globe.
Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, will lead a delegation of industry, academic and government representatives to China May 12 to 19 where he will finalize agreements to help commercialize Alberta and Chinese technology while developing investment opportunities and encouraging partnerships. He will also continue to build on the Alberta government's strategy of strengthening ties between our province and China through greater collaboration among researchers, students, educators and business and government decision makers.
"The Alberta government has strategically invested time and resources on the China market. Now, we are committing to partnerships to exchange ideas and innovations that will have tangible benefits for all parties," said Horner.
While in China, the delegation will travel to Beijing, Harbin, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Scheduled public events include addressing business, academic, research and technology community leaders. In addition to finalizing agreements, Horner will also address researchers at a bioscience workshop exploring additional opportunities for future collaboration in related research and technology development. Throughout the week Horner will meet with high-level government, industry and embassy officials to increase their awareness of Alberta's world-class expertise in educating and training a highly-qualified workforce.
The total cost of the trip for the minister and his executive assistant is estimated at $23,500 and includes transportation, accommodation, meals and other related mission expenses.
By strengthening relationships with key public and private organizations and promoting the province's global role in the 21st-century knowledge-based economy, this mission supports Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to build a stronger Alberta. Other priorities for the government are to govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, improve Albertans' quality of life and promote safe and secure communities.
