July 6 -- Fort Victoria Jamboree and Craft Sale
Enjoy good company, music, crafts and delicious food at the Fort Victoria Jamboree and Craft Sale on July 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early settlers would gather at Fort Victoria to welcome the summer and connect with friends and family. Visitors can do the same on July 6 with a church service at the Pakan United Church at 11 a.m., followed by a historic tea at noon and a craft sale. Enjoy hot food, demonstrations, tours and kids activities. Visitors are invited to bring a fiddle and join local and visiting entertainers on stage, jamboree style. Admission is $8 for families, $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1.50 for youth (age 7 to 17). Children under 7 are admitted free. Operated by Alberta Culture and Community Spirit, Victoria Settlement is located 10 kilometres south of Smoky Lake on Secondary Highway 855 and six kilometres east on the historic Victoria Trail. July 11 -- Cypress Hills Butterfly Count
Families and butterfly enthusiasts are welcome to join Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park interpreters on Saturday, July 11 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the ninth annual butterfly count. Visitors will learn how to identify butterflies at the visitor centre and then head out with parks staff to count the butterflies in the park. Cypress Hills is Canada's first interprovincial park (Alberta and Saskatchewan); it is the highest point in Canada between the Rocky Mountains and Labrador. July 23 - 26 -- Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games
Nearly 1,200 participants, aged 55 years and older, are gearing up to take part in 17 different activities in the 2009 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in Airdrie July 23 - 26. Participants from across the province competed in zone playoffs to earn the right to represent their zone at the games. Zone pep rallies being held in eight communities will provide participants with important information about the games. The opening ceremonies for the games take place July 23 at 7 p.m. The competition includes track and field events, cycling, golf, swimming and tennis, as well as a cultural component featuring creative writing and arts and crafts.
