In June and July, the Government of Alberta engaged with Albertans to hear their thoughts on proposed changes to the Act. Their views were received through public sessions, responses to an online questionnaire and written submissions. In total, 2,402 people attended 21 public sessions across Alberta; 2,376 questionnaires were submitted; and there were 122 letters. The feedback has been summarized and posted online.

The Municipal Government Act sets a foundation for how all 344 municipalities in Alberta operate and it has an impact on every Albertan. Proposed changes to the Act, introduced in the legislature this May 31, fall into three broad categories:
- How municipalities are empowered to govern
- How municipalities work together and plan for growth
- How municipalities are funded
An amended Modernized Municipal Government Act, incorporating the feedback, will be debated in the legislature this fall. All changes to the Act, including regulations, will come into force before municipal elections in the fall of 2017.
