University of Calgary to increase space for health and social work programming

Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt and University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon

The Alberta government is committing $8.6 million each year for two years for the planning phase of the MacKimmie Block and Tower buildings and Professional Faculties redevelopment. Through the planning stage, University of Calgary officials will refine existing building and space concepts, analyze site and space requirements and determine alignment with existing building codes to accommodate anticipated growth in the faculties of nursing and social work within the complex.

“Investing in modern and efficient infrastructure is vital to the long-term success of Alberta’s students and our province. Our government supports the University of Calgary’s efforts to plan for the future and ensure students continue to have access to world-class programming, learning spaces and resources for years to come.”

Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education

Repurposing the buildings rather than demolishing and reconstructing them is expected to save up to $85 million. By redeveloping the complex, the University of Calgary expects to address space shortages while consolidating programming. It will also allow room for student-centric services as well as new study and classroom space.

“We appreciate the support of the provincial government, as it is critical for meeting the growing demand from current students and those looking to upgrade their skills. The redevelopment will allow us to consolidate student services and add new study and classroom space within the heart of the main campus.”

Elizabeth Cannon, President, University of Calgary

The MacKimmie Block and Tower buildings were originally constructed in 1963 and 1972.
