This release was issued under a previous government.

“I would like to thank the Auditor General for his investigation of the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee and for his thoughtful recommendations.

“I am very concerned about the lack of oversight over Public Trustee clients’ money that allowed these funds to accumulate unnecessarily over time under the former government. Our priority is to ensure that these funds are appropriately managed for the benefit of their rightful owners.

“We accept and agree with the Auditor General’s recommendations to improve the management of the common fund as well as the reporting processes of the Public Trustee.

“An independent review of the clients’ common fund is currently underway and I am committed to working with the Public Trustee as well as the consultant to ensure the terms of reference for this review address and provide advice on the Auditor General’s recommendations.

“This was allowed to go on for far too long, and I am committed to making whatever changes are necessary to ensure that the Office of the Public Trustee and Guardian fulfils its obligations to vulnerable Albertans with the utmost diligence.”
