This release was issued under a previous government.

The resulting organization, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta, will issue a single designation: Chartered Professional Accountant, or CPA.

“The proclamation of a single professional designation marks a major step for the accounting profession in Alberta, making it easier for accountants and the public who use their services.”

Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour

Since June 2013, the Alberta government has worked with the self-regulating accounting associations - the Certified General Accountants Association of Alberta, the Certified Management Accountants of Alberta and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta - to enable a merger that improves and enhances business practices in Alberta.

This Act brings Alberta in line with other Canadian jurisdictions by unifying Alberta’s approximately 27,000 accountants into one body.

The Chartered Professional Accountants Act will facilitate increased labour mobility and safeguard the interests of all Albertans.
