“Throughout Alberta and around the world, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists are celebrating the holiday of Diwali, also known as the festival of lights.

“Diwali is a time for gathering with family and friends and sharing good food and good fellowship. It is also a time for prayer and a renewed commitment to helping those less fortunate.

“In observance of this holiday, the Diya is lit to symbolize the triumph of right over wrong, hope over despair and freedom over bondage. As that lamp is lit, it reminds us that we should all strive to bring light to places still facing darkness.

“Diwali festivities are a significant contribution to Alberta’s rich cultural heritage. To all those celebrating, I wish you, your families and loved ones a happy Diwali.”
