Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre opens in Medicine Hat

Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre in Medicine Hat is one of 12 new P3 schools to open this September

“This proves, yet again, that Alberta’s P3s work. These 12 state-of-the-art new schools were delivered on time and on budget, and at a cost savings of $43 million when compared to using government’s traditional method to build the schools.”

Wayne Drysdale, Minister of Infrastructure

School jurisdictions in eight Alberta communities are busy outfitting the new schools with furniture and equipment, having received the keys to their new facilities on or before June 30, as per the terms of the P3 contract.

These 12 P3 schools are part of a $550-million investment, announced by the Alberta government in May 2011, to complete 35 new schools and modernization projects (22 new schools and 13 modernizations) in some of Alberta’s fastest-growing communities.  The majority of the school projects outside the P3 bundle are complete or on track to be completed and ready for students beginning this fall.

“Our government is delivering on the commitment it made to Alberta families and communities to build and modernize schools. For many years to come, tens of thousands of students throughout the province will benefit from these recently completed school projects and from the 120 new school capital projects currently underway.”

Jeff Johnson, Minister of Education

P3s Provide Value for Money

The Government of Alberta has demonstrated value for money using P3s to deliver new schools. Using a P3 delivery model for three bundles, totaling 40 new schools, has saved Alberta taxpayers more than $245 million.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
