Alberta's Cool Little Towns

Nanton Councillor Corrine Anchoris, Black Diamond Mayor Sharlene Brown and Minister Starke touch the namesake of the town of Black Diamond

Cool Little Towns is a partnership between High River, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Okotoks, Nanton and the MD of Foothills to encourage people to visit the region.

“Alberta’s tourism industry is resilient and strong, as shown by the communities of Cool Little Towns and their dedication to rebuild and make this region an even bigger Alberta attraction.”

Dr. Richard Starke, Minister, Tourism, Parks and Recreation

Representatives from Cool Little Towns gathered in Black Diamond on June 10 to celebrate tourism growth in the region.

“The revitalization of cool little towns gives all of our communities the opportunity to showcase the best places in southern Alberta to visit and to explore.  From the rolling foothills to the majestic Rocky Mountains, the communities that are involved in Cool Little towns offer day trippers an experience of a lifetime.”

Sharlene Brown, Mayor, Black Diamond

The tourism grant will be used by the communities to enhance the Cool Little Towns website, identify potential themed driving tours and determine events that could be developed or enhanced to attract more visitors to the area. It supports efforts by government and industry to grow tourism in Alberta to a $10.3 billion industry by 2020 as outlined in Alberta’s Tourism Framework.

Other comments:

“This grant is a huge help in our flood recovery efforts as it gives us much needed resources to promote our communities and attract visitors back to the area. We all benefit from working together and expanding our regional tourism opportunities.”

Kelly Tuck, Mayor, Turner Valley

“The province’s support of those communities vastly affected by the June floods illustrates their ongoing commitment to bringing tourism back and it’s never been a more moving time to be a part of the rebuilding process.  Come out and take a look at what we have to offer, we promise not to disappoint!”

Larry Spilak, Reeve, Municipal District of Foothills

“The funding is a welcomed investment supporting further growth in tourism, which will generate opportunities, create jobs and strengthen the overall regional economic health.”

Bill Robertson, Mayor, Okotoks

“Attracting visitors to the region has demonstrated the positive impact of tourism on community and regional development. The Town of Nanton would like to thank Tourism, Parks and Recreation for its support of the next phase of the exciting Cool Little Towns initiative.”

Rick Everett, Mayor, Nanton

“An important part of High River’s recovery from last year’s flood is in renewing the vision of our community as a great place to visit. Through this support from the government, the Cool Little Towns initiative will be able to showcase the great things that are available in our area.”

Craig Snodgrass, Mayor High River

Tourism flood recovery support:

  • A total of $550,000 over three years (2013-16) has been allocated to help keep tourism strong in southern Alberta following the June 2013 flooding.
  • Visitor Information Centres were given additional resources during and immediately after the flood to assist visitors who were stranded or unable to reach their destinations.
  • Canmore Business and Tourism received $75,000 in 2013 to assist with activating events in the Kananaskis region.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
