Deputy Premier Dave Hancock announcing the two Aboriginal Women’s Economic Security Councils on December 9, 2013.

The Alberta government will support Aboriginal women’s issues, and those seeking to make greater inroads to Alberta’s economic and employment opportunities.

“Aboriginal people make up the youngest and fastest growing segment of our population; and their communities are pursuing greater participation in our labour force and in the overall economy of Alberta. The investments and partnerships we make with the Aboriginal community today will benefit all Albertans in the years to come.”

Frank Oberle, Minister of Aboriginal Relations

Economic Opportunities Initiative

Government is developing an Economic Opportunities Initiative jointly with willing and interested First Nations to increase their participation in the economy.

Priorities under this initiative currently include:

  • preparing youth to participate in the economy;
  • increasing the participation of Aboriginal women;
  • promoting entrepreneurial participation;
  • reducing social barriers to participation; and
  • building organizational capacity to support economic participation.

Aboriginal Women’s Initiatives and Research

The establishment of two economic security councils for First Nations and Metis women will help to improve the social and economic lives of Aboriginal women in Alberta.

“Aboriginal women are at the heart of their communities but they often are the most vulnerable. The two councils will help them voice their needs and concerns and increase their participation in Alberta’s prosperity.”

Frank Oberle, Minister of Aboriginal Relations

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
