New Chief Justice and Associate Chief Justice appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta

Justice Minister Alison Redford congratulates the appointments of Honourable Neil C. Wittmann as Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta and Honourable John D. Rooke as Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, announced today by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“Both these individuals bring a great deal of experience to their new positions,” said Alison Redford, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “I am confident they will provide very strong leadership.”

The Honourable Justice Wittmann, Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, is appointed Chief Justice to replace the Honourable Chief Justice A. H. Wachowich, who elected to become a supernumerary justice effective October 1. The Honourable Justice Wittmann was appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta on January 18, 2005. Prior to that he served as a justice with the Court of Appeal of Alberta in Calgary since 1999.

The Honourable Justice Rooke, currently a justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, is appointed Associate Chief Justice to replace the Honourable Justice Wittmann. Associate Chief Justice Rooke was first appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench in 1991.

Both appointments are effective immediately.
