Budget 2015 invests $4.7 billion for roads and bridges

The Government of Alberta will begin consultations in 2016 with municipal partners and key stakeholders to restore the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP) beginning with the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Funding for this important program was cut in 2013 by the previous government. Under restored funding, $100 million will be made available between 2017 and 2019.

In addition to STIP, Budget 2015 invests $4.6 billion in road and bridge projects throughout Alberta. This includes highway expansion, safety upgrades and large scale projects such as Edmonton and Calgary Ring Roads.

“Municipal leaders have told us how important these investments are and we have heard them loud and clear. Our government is committed to investing in safe, modern, efficient infrastructure that gets people moving while driving job creation in the engineering and construction industries.”

Brian Mason, Minister of Transportation

“A modern system of roads and bridges is essential to daily life in Alberta’s communities. Our industries rely on our transportation network to move goods to market quickly and efficiently, and Albertans everywhere depend on safe access to jobs and emergency services. Investing in roads and bridges now is a great step in enabling our communities to grow sustainably in the future.”

Al Kemmere, President of Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties

The key outcomes for STIP funded projects include:

  • Improving connectivity between Alberta communities.
  • Enhancing mobility of people, goods and services on Alberta highways in a prudent, sustainable way.
  • Increasing capacity of transportation infrastructure to support economic growth and meet the needs of traveling Albertans.
  • Improving the safety and efficiency of Alberta highways.
  • Extending the service life of infrastructure to reduce long-term costs on the path to balanced budgets.

Over the next five years, the Government of Alberta is investing in Alberta Transportation’s Capital Plan of $9.1 billion to build and repair roads and bridges, support water and wastewater facilities and enhance public transit across the province.
