The provincial award was presented to Officer Dutta on November 4, 2015 in recognition of his actions on July 28, 2015, when he saved the life of a park visitor who was pulled unresponsive from Barrier Lake in Kananaskis.

“Every day, Alberta Parks’ Conservation Officers work hard to protect public safety and our natural environment. Every so often, they’re called upon to go above and beyond, as Mr. Dutta was in July. We are proud to recognize our public security staff when these events occur, and the Chief’s Commendation Award is the highest form of that recognition.”

Shannon Phillips, Minister of Environment and Parks

Officer Dutta responded to an emergency call following a boating accident on Barrier Lake. His speed and personal strength in aiding the victim, helping to revive him and quickly getting him to waiting medical care, were determined to have saved the man’s life.

“Officer Amit Dutta is a deserving first recipient of this award. His courage, quick thinking, and professionalism made him an ideal candidate, and we’re very proud to be able to honour him in this way.”

Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General

The Chief’s Commendation Award was created in September 2014 to recognize acts of personal heroism or conspicuous acts of courage and/or lifesaving in circumstances of peril and personal hazard to life.

Officers in all branches of Justice and Solicitor General’s Public Security Division are eligible for nomination, including Sheriffs, Conservation Officers, Fish and Wildlife Officers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers.
