With an unseasonably dry, warm summer and low river levels, the potential for damage to the aquatic ecosystem increases. While motorized vehicle users may think it is fun to drive their motorized vehicle into a river, lake or stream, it can be harmful to the environment, the fish and the pocketbook.
Operating a motorized vehicle in a natural waterway is an offense under the Public Lands Administration Regulations and can result in fines of up to $25,000. Similar charges can also be laid under the province’s Water Act.
Albertans are encouraged to help keep the province’s waterways clean and beautiful. Offenders can be reported by calling the Environment hotline at 1-800-222-6514 or by contacting their local city police or RCMP detachment.
