This release was issued under a previous government.

Service Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures, has launched an online competition to see how the government’s open data can be used to create applications that provide social and economic value to Albertans.

Voting to choose the People’s Choice winner is open and will close on July 24. Finalists can be viewed on the Apps for Alberta website on Challenge Post.

“Making information accessible is just one way our government is demonstrating our commitment to transparency. This competition is an interactive way to introduce more Albertans to the wealth of data that’s available to them.”

Deron Bilous, Minister of Service Alberta

Some of the apps help Albertans understand government better, while others help us enjoy and make the most of our natural resources. Several apps aim to increase accessibility to different types of government information including vital statistics and expenses. Many are focused on making it easier to live and raise a family in Alberta.

Other than the People’s Choice Award, app developers are competing in three other categories that will be judged by a government panel:

  • Best Overall Application
  • Best Made in Alberta App Award
  • Best Student App Award

Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures has provided $70,000 in prize money across the four categories to encourage entrepreneurism and technological innovation.
