Monitoring results show water flow levels have dropped to about 30 per cent of normal along the entire reach of the Battle River. When this happens, water withdrawals may increase stress to fish and wildlife by lowering the amount of available water. And so water withdrawals need to be restricted.

Under the Battle River Management Plan, licencees are required to reduce or cease water use during low flow periods. Junior licences may include a minimum flow condition that will require them to stop withdrawing at current levels.

The basin will be closed for any new temporary diversion licenses until the flow improves. Licencees with questions regarding their licences may contact their regional water office.

Alberta Environment and Parks staff will continue to monitor water levels and restrict withdrawals until further notice.
