For almost 30 years, Seniors’ Week has honoured older Albertans with special events across the province.

Seniors are a vital part of our province – they are parents and grandparents, mentors and friends, employers, employees and volunteers. Seniors’ Week is a terrific opportunity to take time and catch up with the seniors in your life and meet new people.

The provincial launch event, co-hosted by Strathcona County, gets the week going at the Ardrossan Recreation Complex on June 1.

Seniors’ Week was inspired in part by Alice Modin, a Strathcona County resident who three decades ago urged the county to declare a seniors’ day. Momentum grew and what was once a one day in one locale celebration is now a province-wide week of festivities. Alice’s children, Nelson Modin and Betty Henderson, will be on hand at this year’s provincial launch event to receive the official Seniors’ Week proclamation.

The nominees of this year’s Minister’s Seniors Service Awards will also be honoured at community celebrations in Edmonton, Calgary, Leduc, Fairview and Stony Plain during Seniors’ Week.  Award recipients will be recognized in a special ceremony in the fall.
