For generations, Albertans have been packing tents, loading backpacks and hooking up trailers to spend the first long weekend of the season enjoying our provincial parks and recreation areas.

While Albertans are eager to shake off the winter and reconnect with the new outdoor season, there are a few things would-be long weekend campers should keep in mind:

  • Vacancies are still available. To find a spot, check the Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca vacancy calendar, or contact the Alberta Parks call centre at 1-877-537-2757. A large majority of campsites are first-come, first-serve.
  • Liquor bans and fire bans will be in effect at some provincial campgrounds, so check before you go.
  • Alberta Parks’ day use areas are free. Facilities and services vary significantly so research what is in place before you hit the road.
  • AlbertaParks.ca is the one-stop shop for all things camping and provincial parks.

Alberta’s provincial parks system has almost 14,000 campsites in 250 provincial campgrounds. With a provincial park or recreation area within a one-hour drive of every community, it is easy to enjoy a traditional Alberta May long weekend.  Don’t forget to bring your camera!
