Drivers across the province will benefit from the Government of Alberta’s Capital Plan investment of $6.7 billion over five years in the provincial highway network.

“Budget 2015 protects our core highway network for the long-term by strategically investing in key connector routes and moving forward with major projects. This year, we’ve set some clear priorities and made some tough choices in order to keep our promise to provide all Albertans with a safe and reliable transportation system for many years to come.”

Wayne Drysdale, Minister of Transportation

Projects currently underway or planned:

  • Road rehabilitation, including overlay and second-stage paving, on highways across the province, including work on various sections of Highways 1, 2, 3, 16, 28, 43, 58, 63, 88 and 670 for safer and smoother travel.
  • Completion of the Highway 12 realignment project near the town of Bentley, which includes final paving, to increase the efficient movement of goods through the region.
  • Curve revisions, widening and overlay on sections of Highway 28 near Redwater to improve safety and efficiency for local and industrial traffic.
  • Construction of three roundabouts to improve traffic flow and intersection safety: one at Highway 2A and Highway 597 near Blackfalds, one at Highway 13 and Highway 21 near Camrose, and a third at the junction of Highways 23 and 519 northwest of Lethbridge.
  • Construction of a new bridge over East Sousa Creek on Highway 58 for safer travel between High Level and Rainbow Lake.
  • Completion of the realignment of Highway 22, south of Drayton Valley, including construction of a new bridge to improve market access for industry.
  • Investment of $243 million in the coming year on Highway 63 twinning. When complete in 2016, government will have invested $1.2 billion into the twinning project to increase safety and accessibility in this important region.
  • Investment of $6 million over two years to update the six-lane QE II (Highway 2) Corridor planning study between Edmonton and Calgary, which will expand one of the province’s busiest highways.

Alberta Transportation’s Provincial Construction Program is available online and includes both rehabilitation and construction projects. The program focuses on protecting our existing provincial transportation network and continuing to expand market access by investing in core infrastructure and key corridors.
