The recipients of the scholarships are studying in programs that will lead to the advancement of women, or are studying in fields that are non?traditional for their gender.

This year, 248 applications were received and 40 individuals were awarded scholarships. The recipients come from a wide range of programs such as atomic laser physics, microbiology and architecture. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $6,000, with a total of $100,000 being awarded.

History

The Persons Case Scholarship program is in honour of the five Alberta women who fought and won the right for women to be deemed as “persons” under Canadian law in 1929. Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards are credited with this significant advancement for women and are known as Alberta’s Famous Five.

To qualify, applicants must be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary institution and be from Alberta.
