“We know there is a direct relation between having safe, stable housing and a senior’s overall well-being. This investment helps ensure seniors can stay in their communities, close to family, friends and neighbours.”

Jeff Johnson, Minister of Seniors

The Alberta government will invest $7.9 million to add 42 new units to the current 45-unit North Ridge Lodge in St. Albert. The North Ridge Lodge is owned and operated by the Sturgeon Foundation and opened to residents in 1992.

“St. Albert is a great community because of our seniors who helped build it. The safety and well-being of our seniors is extremely important, and I am glad to see that St. Albert is being allocated the funds we need to ensure that.”

Stephen Khan, Minister of Service Alberta and MLA for St. Albert

This commitment to seniors’ stable housing is in addition to sprinkler and fire safety upgrades in the community. Nearly $1.4 million will be invested to upgrade three seniors’ facilities in St. Albert, which include North Ridge Lodge, Chateau Mission and St. Albert’s Seniors Residence.

Seniors lodges are owned by the Alberta government, local non-profit foundations, or municipalities. Lodges provide bed and sitting rooms, meals, housekeeping, other services, and recreational opportunities for low and moderate-income seniors who are functionally independent.

The Alberta government owns or supports 9,700 seniors lodge units throughout the province. Approximately 30 per cent of these are in larger urban communities. Government is investing $70 million for new or expanded lodges in urban communities.
