“Remembrance Day was created after the First World War, a conflict that began 100 years ago. The purpose of the day is to ensure that we never forget the sacrifice of those who have fought, and died, for our freedom.

“Over the last century, we have had more examples of sacrifice – in the Second World War, the Korean War, in peacekeeping missions around the world, in the Balkans and in Afghanistan.

“This year, through acts of violence within our own borders, we have seen once again that tragedy – and sacrifice – is not confined to history.

“As Albertans and Canadians, our best tribute to the men and women who have given all in the service of their country comes from remembering their ultimate and very simple wish: that we live in peace. By living fully, freely and justly, for ourselves and our fellow citizens, we bring the greatest meaning to the memory of those who have served, and paid the ultimate price.”
