Family, friends and the public joined Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell and Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis as well as members of the provincial law enforcement community to remember the men and women who have died in service to our province.
“On behalf of all Albertans I want to express our deepest gratitude to the officers who gave their lives to ensure we can live in safe communities. These officers made the ultimate sacrifice and we are forever indebted to them.”
One name was added to Alberta’s Pillar of Strength monument this year: Canadian Pacific Railway Police Const. Robert George MacIntosh, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in Calgary in 1912 while attempting to stop a theft.
This day coincides with the national Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Sunday of each September in provinces across Canada.
