This release was issued under a previous government.

“This morning, I learned that the MLA for Calgary – Elbow and our former Premier, Alison Redford, has resigned her seat in the Legislature.

“In my view, given the information that has come to light, Ms. Redford has done the right thing and taken responsibility for her actions. I commend her for taking this step.

“Tomorrow, the Auditor General will release his report on travel expenses and use of government aircraft, and we will respond to its findings at that time.

“Based on what I have read in the report, and after seeking legal advice, as soon as the report is publicly available tomorrow I will be directing the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General to refer this matter to the RCMP for their review and any investigations that they consider appropriate.

“While this is a difficult decision for me, I am extremely disappointed to learn of Ms. Redford’s actions while Premier. I had great respect for her and great hope for the promise she showed early in her tenure.

“As she said in her own statement, a lot of good was done for Albertans and Alberta and that is why this turn of events is so unfortunate.

“As elected officials, we are first and foremost public servants. We are entrusted with resources that are to be used only for public benefit.

“I want to assure Albertans that our government understands and respects this trust.”
