This release was issued under a previous government.

The interchange allows free-flowing eastbound and westbound traffic on Highway 1 resulting in less congestion, smoother highway traffic and reduced demand on Medicine Hat’s roadway infrastructure.

“Completing this $23 million interchange will relieve congestion for Medicine Hat residents and improve travel for all motorists on Highway 1. This investment is just another example of government’s commitment to increasing market access, enhancing motorist safety and continuously improving Alberta’s transportation network.”

Wayne Drysdale, Minister of Transportation

Two new bridges carry the TransCanada over Dunmore Road with two sets of lights at the ramps onto Dunmore Road.

“This interchange provides a critical link for local businesses and residents, meaning safer access to the surrounding communities and commercial businesses. It is an outstanding example of collaboration between Alberta Transportation and the City. The new interchange offers safer, free-flow travel while supporting the east-west trade corridor.”

Ted Clugston, Mayor, City of Medicine Hat

The Dunmore Road interchange includes two new bridges, highway grade raising and embankment works, paving, installation of new storm sewer drainage lines and highway barriers, road widening to allow for left turn and merge lanes, new traffic signals and roadway lighting, and construction of a multi-user pathway to accommodate pedestrian traffic.

Motorists will see crews working in the area over the next two weeks as the final layer of paving along with lane markings will be completed for the dual-lane ramps to safely carry TransCanada Highway traffic off of and onto Dunmore Road.

Last December, the province opened the $19 million westbound TransCanada Bridge over the South Saskatchewan River on the west side of Medicine Hat, bringing the total investment in transportation infrastructure in Medicine Hat to $42 million.

Both Medicine Hat projects support the government’s commitment to building Alberta’s economic future as an integral component of the network that moves goods across Alberta to local, national or international destinations.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
