Workers will build a retaining wall along the southside of Highway 575 between Highways 836 and 837 to prevent further detoriation of the hillside along the road.

Construction Times

  •  7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Monday, July 28 to Saturday, August 2.
  • The highway will reopen each night.

A 30-minute detour will be in place during construction hours. Motorists heading out of Drumheller on Highway 575 will:

  • Continue north on Highway 837
  • Turn west on to Highway 27, and
  • Turn south on Highway 836 to reconnect with Highway 575.

Those heading east on Highway 575 into Drumheller will reverse the detour.

Repairs

The retaining wall piles will be built about 10 metres down in the ground to stabalize the hillside. The wall will then be constructed two metres above ground. Workers will backfill from the retaining wall to the road and will then repair the highway pavement.

The road must be closed to traffic during daytime construction because equipment needed to make the repairs takes up both lanes of the highway.

This innovative $240,000 repair plan means the province will not have to realign the highway, a project that would have cost more than $1 million.
