This release was issued under a previous government.

More than 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes during the June 2013 floods. One year later, the Government of Alberta continues to provide support to the last 120 residents who are in need of longer-term housing. These residents will have the option to move into Coal Plaza Apartments or other housing administered by the Foothills Foundation – the regional housing body. Residents may also elect to arrange their own accommodations.

“We recognize the significant challenges some Albertans still face as a result of last year’s flooding and we are committed to providing a safe and affordable place to call home for those in need.”

Greg Weadick, Minister of Alberta Municipal Affairs

The Town of High River was consulted on housing options most appropriate and economically responsible for the current and future needs of the community. The proposed Highwood Junction interim housing site will not proceed given the significant reduction in demand.

Accommodation options

The goal is to transition the estimated 120 residents out of the Saddlebrook temporary neighbourhood when it closes this summer as planned. Residents have a variety of accommodation options available, including:

  • Coal Plaza Apartments (62 one, two and three-bedroom units), which will provide affordable rental suites. Those who need housing assistance can apply to the Foothills Foundation;
  • Community Housing, including senior accommodations, may be available to eligible tenants through the Foothills Foundation; or
  • Private accommodations as arranged at the household’s discretion.

Under the Building Alberta Plan, our government is investing in families and communities, living within our means, and opening new markets for Alberta's resources to ensure we're able to fund the services Albertans told us matter most to them. We will continue to deliver the responsible change Albertans voted for.
