Beginning July 9, 2014 speed limits will be reduced along the construction area 60 kilometres southeast of Slave Lake while the contractor builds a short, two-lane detour. Traffic will then shift to the temporary road so that a new, larger culvert can be installed, about one kilometre north of the Highway 2/2A junction.

Construction work

The $2.9 million project will see the old, 2.4-metre-wide steel culvert replaced with a 4.4-metre-wide culvert. This will increase the capacity for water in this Rourke Creek tributary to flow beneath the highway, mitigating flooding and improving travel on the highway.

During construction:

  • Speed limits will be reduced to 50 km/h.
  • Signs and flag persons will be utilized to control traffic.
  • Motorists should watch for construction equipment in the area.
  • Speed fines double in construction zones when workers are present.
