The new hospital in Sherwood Park will open in stages. When the hospital opens May 21, patients will have immediate access to new services such as laboratory services, a CT scanner, an intravenous therapy clinic, diagnostic imaging and an around-the-clock emergency department.
“We are building a better health care system that focuses largely on primary care. Not only will people and families come to the Strathcona Community Hospital for access to a 24-hour emergency department, people will also come for primary care to help manage their health and chronic conditions to hopefully avoid hospital stays in the first place.”

The hospital will serve about 92,000 Strathcona County residents, plus people living in east Edmonton. This new facility will mean that about 30,000 fewer patients will need to make trips to Edmonton to visit a 24-hour emergency department, and will help alleviate some pressures in those facilities.

Patients who are seriously ill will be treated at Strathcona Community Hospital, stabilized and then transferred to the appropriate acute care hospital in Edmonton.
The new hospital, located at 9000 Emerald Drive in Sherwood Park, will be open to the public for tours during the following times:
- Thursday, May 1, 6 - 8 p.m.
- Friday, May 2, 6 - 8 p.m.
- Saturday, May 3, 2 - 4 p.m.
A virtual tour of the new facility will also be available on May 1 on the AHS website.
Urgent care services offered at Health First Strathcona will be integrated into the new hospital after the centre closes at midnight on May 20, 2014. People are encouraged to call Health Link Alberta at 1-866-408-5465 for health advice or to find out where to go to receive health care treatment.
