Strathcona Community Hospital opens its doors May 21, 2014

The new hospital in Sherwood Park will open in stages. When the hospital opens May 21, patients will have immediate access to new services such as laboratory services, a CT scanner, an intravenous therapy clinic, diagnostic imaging and an around-the-clock emergency department.

“We are building a better health care system that focuses largely on primary care. Not only will people and families come to the Strathcona Community Hospital for access to a 24-hour emergency department, people will also come for primary care to help manage their health and chronic conditions to hopefully avoid hospital stays in the first place.”

Fred Horne, Minister of Health

Hospital highlights

  • $130-million facility
  • 24-hour emergency department
  • CT scanner
  • IV therapy clinic
  • Outpatient clinics to phase in after initial opening include: low-risk prenatal and women’s health, seniors health, orthopedic and sports medicine
  • Space for future expansion
  • Innovative infection prevention and control measures
  • Energy efficient design

The hospital will serve about 92,000 Strathcona County residents, plus people living in east Edmonton. This new facility will mean that about 30,000 fewer patients will need to make trips to Edmonton to visit a 24-hour emergency department, and will help alleviate some pressures in those facilities.

“The Strathcona Community Hospital will bring health care closer to home for the residents of Sherwood Park and Strathcona County. It will provide patients and families with increased access to first-class care.”

Dave Quest, Associate Minister of Seniors and MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park

“I’m excited about the new services that will be available to the citizens of Sherwood Park. 24/7 emergency services, CT scanning and IV therapy are examples of what will now be accessible within our community.”

Cathy Olesen, MLA for Sherwood Park

"This innovative new hospital will serve the residents of Strathcona in collaboration with local physicians. It will provide access to a modern Emergency Department as well as specialized ambulatory clinics."

Dr. David Mador, Vice President and Medical Director, Northern Alberta, Alberta Health Services
