This release was issued under a previous government.

Rolling closures will take place on the un-twinned sections of Highways 16, 36/29, 28 and 63 between Lloydminster and Fort McMurray as the convoy passes. The convoy is the width of two lanes.

To maximize safety for motorists and minimize traffic disruptions, Alberta Transportation has required the carrier to move the load at night.

Dates: March 24 to 28

Travel route

March 24, starting at 6 p.m.

  • West on 67 Street out of Lloydminster at 6 p.m., south on Range Road 14, west on Highway 16 and north on Highway 36 to Two Hills, about 160 kilometres.

March 25, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  • East on Highway 45 from Two Hills, north on Highway 36/Hwy29 and West on Highway 28 to Radway, about 110 kilometres.

March 26, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  • West on Highway 28 from Radway and north on Highway 63 to Wandering River, about 150 kilometres.

March 27, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  • North on Highway 63 from Wandering River to Fort McMurray, about 200 kilometres.

March 28, between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

  • North on Highway 63 from Fort McMurray to the site, about 90 kilometres.

Motorists may face up to 30-minute delays during nightly rolling stops as the load moves on non-twinned sections of highway. Travellers may wish to select alternate routes.

Additional information

  • Motorists travelling at the time of this move should watch for the pilot vehicle and any flag persons along the designated route.
  • The loads will use the entire width of a two-lane highway including the shoulder.
  • Signs have been posted along the route to notify motorists of the travel dates and times.
  • Pilot vehicles, an RCMP escort and flag persons will travel with the loads to control traffic and enhance safety.
  • Motorists can view the convoy’s progress at 511.alberta.ca and are encouraged to plan their travels accordingly.
  • Government of Alberta policy requires oversized loads to pull over periodically when travelling at a speed of more than 10 km/h below the posted speed limit or when travelling at a speed of 10 km/h or less below the posted speed limit.
