Province supports at-risk youth and police crisis team

Grande Prairie...
By addressing the root causes of crime, two new targeted projects seek to make Grande Prairie a safer community. The Alberta government, through the Safe Communities Innovation Fund, is providing support to launch a new integrated police response team and a new youth intervention program.

“This is about finding local solutions to local issues,” said Premier Ed Stelmach. “By funding grassroots projects we’re empowering communities to address crime and safety issues in their own backyards.”

Individuals with mental health issues who commit a minor, non-violent crime now have a team of police, social workers and nurses to help them get the support they need and to deter them from future involvement in crime. Grande Prairie’s Police and Crisis Team (PACT) will provide assessment, decide on the appropriate treatment, and offer referrals to programs. The team will receive $911,000 from the province over three years.

“This project will enhance the efforts of the police in the Grande Prairie region,” added Stelmach. “By partnering police with mental health professionals we’re providing our officers with another tool to break the cycle of re-offending.”

In addition, the Grande Prairie Community Youth Intervention Program will assist police in identifying young people with risk factors that lead to criminal activity, and offer them help before they come into contact with the justice system. This partnership between the RCMP, City of Grande Prairie, John Howard Society and the Grande Prairie and District RCMP Victim’s Assistance will receive $316,331 from the government over three years.

The Safe Communities Innovation Fund builds on the work of the Safe Communities initiative to address crime on an immediate basis, as well as over the long-term. Applications for the second round of SCIF funding are now being accepted. Funding criteria, application forms, and a list of the first year projects are available at safecommunities.gov.ab.ca.

An important part of the government’s plan for a strong economic recovery is maintaining support for programs and services Albertans need most, such as health care, education and safe and vibrant communities. For more information on the plan visit Alberta.ca.
